Good News from Iraq. Troop "Surge" showing signs of success.
U.S. forces rescued 42 Iraqi civilians from an Al Qaeda hide-out in Diyala northeast of Baghdad, including some who showed signs of torture and broken bones. Some among the 42 had been held as long as four months.
"The people in Diyala are speaking up against Al Qaeda,"said Maj. Gen. Caldwell, top U.S. spokesperson. "U.S. troops have been engaging more directly with Iraqi civilians in Diyala in recent weeks since an additional 3,000 U.S. troops entered the province."
This is the exact reason why we needed a troop surge folks. We are fighting a counter insurgency in Iraq. The only way you win that battle is getting the Iraqi civilians to trust and interact with you. If you do not have enough troops to interact with the locals then you have lost before you ever started.
